A sprinkling of fairy dust will brighten summer in St Kilda as Victorian Opera returns to the Palais Theatre with Gilbert and Sullivan’s enchanting comic operetta, Iolanthe.

Being a fairy has its perks, but fairy law is unforgiving. Twenty-five years ago, Iolanthe was banished from fairyland for marrying a mere mortal. When she is summoned to return, fairy magic collides with the British House of Lords… cue romance, rivalry and ridiculous misunderstandings.

Bringing her signature sparkle to the stage, Australia’s favourite leading lady Rhonda Burchmore stars as the Queen of the Fairies. Stephen Anderson, one of musical theatre’s most versatile performers, takes on the role of the Queen of the Fairies’ chief adversary: the pompous Lord Chancellor, a towering pillar of the English judiciary.

Following the sold-out success of The Pirates of Penzance (2026), Artistic Director Stuart Maunder and conductor James Pratt reunite for another irreverent Gilbert and Sullivan classic.
